MR Grade plywood, also known as Commercial Plywood, is designed for interior applications where there is occasional exposure to moisture, but no direct contact with water. MR stands for Moisture Resistant, not waterproof. MR grade plywood is manufactured using urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin adhesive, which provides resistance against humidity and damp conditions commonly found inside homes and offices.
MR Grade plywood is best suited for dry indoor environments where cost efficiency, visual appeal, and ease of installation are the main priorities. It is widely used for bedroom furniture, wardrobes, office furniture, TV units, and interior paneling, as it performs well under normal room humidity and provides a smooth surface for laminates, veneers, and paint finishes.
Resistant to normal moisture & humidity
Smooth surface finish suitable for laminates & veneers
Good screw-holding capacity
Economical and widely used
Easy to cut, drill, and polish
Suitable for dry areas only
Cannot withstand boiling water
However, MR grade plywood is not waterproof and cannot withstand prolonged exposure to water or high moisture, which may lead to swelling, warping, or delamination over time. Therefore, for areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, utility areas, or locations with frequent moisture exposure, it is advisable to use BWR (Boiling Water Resistant) plywood or IS 710 Marine Grade plywood, as these grades offer superior water resistance, higher strength, and longer durability in challenging environmental conditions.
